Imation's FireWire 20GB Tape Drive
Tape drives don't have the capacity or speed of a CD-RW drive, but many folks still swear by them based on their reliability and longevity. Imation is still making the things and has updated them with the speedier connectivity of FireWire. The company was just showing off its new Travan FireWire 20GB tape drive at PCExpo this week. The Travan FireWire 20GB Tape Drive is now compatible with 1394/iLink-enabled PCs running Windows 98SE, 2000 or ME, as well as FireWire-enabled Macintosh computers, including the G3, G4, PowerBook, iBook, and iMac DV computers. Imation says the Travan FireWire drive delivers up to 120MB per minute (compressed) transfer rate and is bundled with Dantz Retrospect Desktop Backup version 5.5. The 20GB Tape Drive will be available in July for around $500 and the 20GB cartridges can be picked up for around $34.
