Imation's Black Watch DLT IV
Imation just turned loose its Black Watch Digital Linear Tape IV data cartridges, which are compatible with DLTtape 4000, 7000 and 8000 drives. The cartridges feature 40GB/80GB capacity (2:1 compression) and up to 6MB transfer rates. Black Watch Digital Linear Tape IV cartridges are available now. Digital Linear Tape (DLT) use half" tape in a single reel cartridge with data written to the cartridge in a longitudinal position. Imation says there are in excess of 1.6 million DLTtape drives in use today and around 17 million tape cartridges are sold per year. As an aside, Imation just filed a complaint against Quantum Corp., charging Quantum with violations under the Sherman Antitrust Act including price-fixing, conspiracy to monopolize, restraining fair trade and other anti-competitive business practices with respect to the production and sale of media that is compatible with Quantum DLTtape drives. Imation is looking to get damages of at least $150 million, which would be boosted under antitrust law to a minimum of $450 million. Don't know much about these particular legal shenanigans, but if you're interested in Imation's side of the story, you can check out the company's Share:
