IEEE 1394 still has problems

According to analysts, including a VP of research at Cahners In-Stat Group, the IEEE 1394, or FireWire, interface in consumer items is beset with problems. "Plug anything - camcorder, PC, set-top - into Playstation 2 with 1394, and you'll basically get no functionality."

Reportedly, 1394 interfaces frequently work properly only with other systems using the same brand and proprietary programming. One developer of 1394 software says, "At best, today's 1394 products are badly interoperable." Analysts expect several interface standards to evolve in the home networking market as manufacturers seek a solution to the compatibility problem.
