IE8 is Now World's Most Popular Web Browser

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

New world browser king, new shirt.

Firefox 3.5 was for a short period the most popular browser in the world, taking the lead from Micrsoft's Internet Explorer 6. With Firefox users now slowly transitioning from 3.5 to the newly released 3.6, the window was left open for Microsoft to climb ahead--and that's what it has done.

Microsoft pointed to Net Application's January browser market share report showing that Internet Explorer 8 is not only the most popular browser on Windows with 27.9-percent usage share, but that it now has 25.6-percent of market share across all operating systems on a worldwide-weighted usage share basis.

While Internet Explorer has taken a lot of heat over the years for rather loose adherences to web standards and security, especially when compared against the competition, IE8 takes big strides in making the web a better place.

The big factor is IE8's attention to malware protection. Microsoft boasted that, as of today, Internet Explorer 8 has done over 350 million malware blocks.

The only reason IE8 has jumped ahead is because businesses have finally been "forced" to upgrade after the google hack by China scaring them!

@mi1ez:
Not us, we are not allowed to install IE8, Firefox or even IE7, in fact we are not allowed to install anything and they give us XP, IE6 and Office 2000.
But yeah most businesses probably have upgraded to IE8.

saying it's the most popular browser is to suggest upgrades have been voluntary. I doubt that's the issue at all.

Anybody with a browser preference is more likely to go with an alternative, anybody who isn't tech-savvy will allow the update to happen automatically, and anybody not in control of their business system will have the update foisted upon them.

My boss is the perfect example - regardless of how many times I've said not to, he just allows updates to happen and all our Vista machines got upgraded to 8. I took them all off and reverted back to Firefox, to which he complained that "he knows IE".

I just put an IE skin on Firefox and he's not even noticed.

I do the same to my mother, and call me to say that there are something diferent.
For my mother, the only difference between IE and Firefox are "Favicons on Tabs".

Personally the latest version of firefox is the first browser that i can get on with that isnt IE.
Its not through lack of trying. Sure the rest are technically better browsers, IE just did everything i needed it to do with out running a chain of windows across the whole desk top, just to get to a links properties. Or having a stupid 3D bookmarking system.
It did what i wanted to and streamed what i wanted it to without giving me headaches on websites i use.
I still use IE for some things but since teh new release its mainly been FF

So.. if i click on that icon from her shirt does it open?
The rest i don't care, i use Firefox, no IE.

Also if they managed to block that many malware, how many they did not?

The only reason that IE 8 is because schools don't let students install software. Otherwise, would IE8 have a chance? I don't think so. IE8 may be the most popular, but stil the slowest modern browser. Sigh....
