IDF Not - PC Forecast Spells Trouble for Intel

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Research firm IDC said Monday that it has lowered its PC market forecasts for 2002 and 2003 to reflect weakening demand for PCs from both consumer and business users. Total worldwide PC shipments are now expected to reach 135.5 million in 2002, an increase of 1.1 percent from 2001. Unit PC sales are expected to grow 8.4 percent in 2003. IDC's original forecast called for a 4.7 increase in unit sales in 2002 and 11.1 percent increase in 2003.

In the U.S, PC sales are expected to grow by 0.5 percent to 46.3 million units. The return of investment by medium and large-business has been very slow, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, the firm said. Consumer demand, which accounts for roughly a third of PC shipments, also remains weak. Intel also noted reduced demand in its mid-quarter update to analysts last week.
