Very impressive stuff from inside John Carmack's pocket.

The big surprise that John Carmack teased about earlier today was revealed during his keynote at QuakeCon 2010.

We all know about how well the id Tech 5 engine runs Rage on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, but Carmack pulled another platform out of his pocket to demonstrate the new megatexture engine – the iPhone 4.

The big stunner is that the game is able to run on the iPhone 4's A4 chip at a full 60 frames per second, while featuring several lighting effects that we associate with modern GPUs. Even more impressive is that Carmack said that the id Tech 5 engine even runs acceptably well on the original iPhone 2G – not just the beefier CPU and GPUs of the 3GS and newer.

Incredibly, Carmack said that the id Tech 5 engine even when running on the iPhone could "kill anything done on the Xbox or PlayStation 2." How's that for amazing progress?

It's impressive to get the software working - unless there's a separate controller attachment, I imagine that straight ports of games would be awkward though since without putting your fingers in the way of your view the control space might be limited?

Sure, maybe you can find some iphone boys for your crap. At least you have bored the pc community with your endless quake tirade- - that does not introduce anything new, - so they wont fall for your shit anymore. So the logic marketing conclusion is, " lets sell it to some idiots that dont care but have the money... oh ok iphoners ! "

I've always been a big fan of PowerVR graphics. Even though they were told that deferred rendering was impossible with hardware transform and lighting, they went and did it anyway. If they'd released PowerVR Series 4 like we thought was going to happen, it'd have made a big impact on graphics at the time, and I doubt ATi and nVidia would have the same market share today had it been even reasonably successful.
