ICANN puts the .xxx in sex
The Internet Corportation for Assigned Names and Numbers has given its final stamp of approval to another top-level domain (TLD), this one reserved exclusively for pornography sites. The .xxx domain joins .job and .travel as new TLDs created in 2005, and should be available to website operators by the end of the year.
ICANN had previously considered adding the .xxx domain in 2000 along with seven others, but decided against it, saying that there was no "unmet need" for such a TLD. That decision was met with a torrent of criticism from U.S. politicians who accused ICANN of not thinking of the children.
