The board of directors of the Internet Cooperation for Assigned Names and Numbers unanimously voted to add an unspecified number of Top Level Domains to the current seven, prompting both praise and criticism. No particular names were chosen but a vague process for choosing them was established. Esther Dyson, ICANN's chairwoman, said she expects new names by early next year.

In August, ICANN will begin accepting applications for new TLDs from anyone with the $50,000 submission fee. On October 1, a two-week public comment period will begin. ICANN plans to announce in November a list which will be finalized by the end of the year. ICANN members have displayed affection for domain names such as .shop, .tel, .news, .banc, .museum, .union, .travel and .sex.
