IBM Ups Speed Estimates of PowerPC 970 Processor
IBM had previously announced that its PowerPC 970 processor, which is part of IBM's new PowerPC Blade Enterprise Server, was capable of top speeds of 1.8GHz. They have recently revised this estimate upward from speeds of 1.8GHz to a lightning fast 2.5GHz. IBM's Blade Server was designed for mathematical and computational intense scientific applications, such as simulations and geological calculations. It is anticipated that the PowerPC 970 will also be used in Macintosh computers in the near future. The 970 chip has one processor core, rather than the two standard ones in IBM's Power4 processor, and is a "lite" version of the Power4, which is designed for high-end server applications.
