IBM unveils new low-cost OpenPower server

IBM next month will roll out an entry-level two-way OpenPower server designed to compete with Hewlett-Packard’s and Sun’s volume Linux and Unix offerings.

IBM introduced the OpenPower line in September 2004 as a way of bringing the 64-bit Power5 architecture into the growing volume Linux server space. The first system launched was the four-way eServer OpenPower 720. On Monday, the company unveiled the 710, a rack-optimized one- or two-way server that will start at $3450.
