IBM switches on Europe's most powerful computer

IBM said on on Monday it had switched on Europe’s most powerful supercomputer at Germany’s Juelich research centre. The machine, whose first operation will be to calculate the diffusion of harmful materials in soil, has a peak performance of 8.9 teraflops, or 8.9 trillion operations per second.
