IBM supercomputer powers "Virtual Climate Time Machine" at UC Irvine

The University of California at Irvine (UCI) plans to install a new supercomputer to forecast and simulate the effects of global climate change up to 300 years into the future. Dubbed the ’Earth System Modeling Facility, researchers hope that the system will answer their questions on global warming, man-made pollutants, polar-ice movements, and chemical cycles anmd their impact on the earth and its inhabitants over the next few centuries. According to IBM, the cluster consists of seven IBM eServer p655 systems, each with eight POWER4+ processors, and one IBM eServer p690 system with thirty-two POWER4+ chips. The system is capable of calculating 528 GFLOPS, IBM said.
