IBM on Wednesday unveiled its smallest commercial desktop, the NetVista S42, which while measuring about the same size as a collegiate dictionary offers largely the same functionality as its heftier brethren.

"The NetVista S42 desktop is exactly what businesses need for tight office space and was created as a direct result of listening to our customers' needs," said Bob Galush, vice president of marketing for IBM's PC Division, in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

Measuring only 3.3 inches high, 12.2 inches wide and 13.6 inches deep, the compact form factor can be equipped with an Intel Pentium 4 processor, up to 2GB of double data rate (DDR) SDRAM, integrated Ethernet, integrated graphics, four USB 2.0 ports in front and two in the back, and up to a 40GB hard disk drive.
