IBM rolls out copper-fueled supercomputer

IBM today introduces a new version of its RS/6000 SP supercomputer featuring faster copper processors.

A version of the new model containing 1,152 Power3-II chips will be installed at the San Diego Supercomputing Center, to be used by academic researchers.

IBM uses a high-speed switch to connect dozens of "nodes" together for its SP supercomputers - the same method used for the Deep Blue computer that defeated chess champion Garry Kasparov.
