IBM develops flexible transistor

by - source: Tom's Hardware

A roll-up computer screen is among the possibilities that could result from a thin, flexible type of transistor developed by researchers at IBM.

Current transistors are made out of materials that have to be processed at very high temperatures, and must be appliced onto hard, unmeltable surfaces.

In contrast, IBM's new transistor is made out of very thin layers of materials that can be laid down onto plastic. Researchers used a compound called phenethylammonium tin iodide, which combines the organic compound phenethylammonium with the inorganic tin iodide, each in its own layer, in a coating thinner than a human hair.

IBM is looking to see if other metals and organic compounds will also work.
