IBM Corp. is building the biggest Linux-driven supercomputer in existence, consisting of 1024 of its xSeries servers running in parallel. The announcement is timed to reinforce an effort by IBM to promote its adoption of Linux as the company's chosen operating system. The Shell International Exploration and Production, of Royal Dutch Shell, will use the system, in a Dutch location, for analysis of seismic data in the search for oil. IBM will install the machine in January.
