IBM, AMD, Diamond Multimedia join home controls spec

More than 50 leading companies gathered at Intel's Hillsboro, Ore., labs to rally round a new standard for computer-controlled home electronics.

The Home Application Program Interface Working Group is developing a common programming interface for home automation software. The effort is aimed at creating a class of interoperable computerized home devices, including consumer electronics, security, lighting and temperature control systems.

Final approval of the Home API Specification is expected mid-year.Twenty-eight companies have recently joined the Working Group, including AMD, American Megatrends, Diamond Multimedia and IBM. The group was founded by Compaq, Honeywell, Intel, Microsoft, Mitsubishi Electric and Philips Electronics.
