Step 3: Opening an SFTP connection – Transferring Files
In order to be able to remove the SIM-lock, two files need to be copied to the proper directories. This step requires a tool that can open an FTP connection to your iPhone. We used the Mac OS X tool Cyberduck, currently available in version 2.8. You can connect to your iPhone using its IP address, which you wrote down earlier.
To avoid complications later on, it is advisable to deactivate the “Auto-Lock” sleep feature for the display. You’ll also need the IP address that your iPhone uses on your home network. You’ll need it to create an SFTP connection. The iPhone’s entire file tree is displayed after you enter the user name “root” and the password “dottie”.
Now you have to copy the two files “unlock” and “lockdownd” to the appropriate directories. Note: During the last few days, many links to these two files have disappeared.
Navigating from the iPhone’s root directory, the file “lockdownd” needs to be copied to the /USR/LIBEXEC/ directory. The file “unlock” goes into the /APPLICATIONS directory. Afterwards, reset the iPhone by pressing the key on the top right-hand corner again for 5 seconds. Now, make sure that the AT&T SIM card is removed from the iPhone. A paperclip comes in very handy here. Our image gallery gives you a more detailed look at the whole process between the iPhone and the Mac.
Background information: OpenSSH (the Open Secure Shell) is a compilation of tools that allows encrypted network connections using the SSH protocol. The BSD Subsystem is required in order to address the iPhone in command-line mode. It plays a central role in establishing an SSH connection (SFTP).
