iPhone hack confirmed and available

Los Angeles (CA) – The iPhone unlock hack from the guys at iphonesimfree has been confirmed by several news outlets and is now available for purchase. The hack which allows users to drop their AT&T service and use a SIM card from any provider was shown to CNN, Engadget and Gizmodo. Engadget and Gizmodo have also popped up videos of the hack in progress.

Los Angeles software consultant Brett Schulte recently showed off the hack to CNN reporters. He used a new iPhone and replaced its AT&T sim card with a Tmobile card. According to CNN, the entire process took about two minutes.

Iphonesimfree has a core development team of six people and it only sells the hack to resellers who can purchase licenses in 50 to 5000 license batches. The group claims the hack doesn’t require any tools or opening of the iPhone. They add that all the iPhone features, except for the visual voice mail, will still work. Visual voice mail is an AT&T specific feature.

One reseller, wirelessimports.com, is selling the hack for $99. After payment, the buyer downloads and installs the simfree.app on their iphone. The application is executed after a new SIM card is inserted. Simfree.app needs to be executed for every new SIM card that is inserted into the phone.

Of course there is always a chance that Apple or AT&T will release a software update that will render this hack obsolete. While iphonesimfree says their application will unlock phones with updated firmware (including 1.02), they specifically state that it may not work in the future. iPhonesimfree.com’s website states,

“We CANNOT guarantee that this software will work after any future updates for the iPhone. It does currently work on all firmware versions, up to and including, 1.02. We will naturally try to provide our resellers an updated version of our software for each firmware update, it is in our interest, but we do NOT guarantee that we will be able to do so. All updates will be free.”

According to CNN, the hackers at iphonesimfree are big fans of Apple and that they simply wanted to use the iPhone in their respective countries. Currently Apple and AT&T only sell the phone in the United States and require a two-year service agreement.
