Apple says demand has exceeded initial supply.

Apple's iPhone 5 might not go on sale for another few days but that hasn't stopped people pre-ordering the device for delivery on September 21. Apple this morning announced that the phone received two million pre-orders in the first 24 hours. Despite some people saying the iPhone 5 announcement was disappointing, Apple says the phone has received double the pre-orders that the iPhone 4S got in its first 24 hours.

"iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal," Apple VP Philip Schiller said this morning. "iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we've ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do."

For those of you worrying that such demand could mean a delay in your getting your brand new phone, Apple today admitted that demand for iPhone 5 exceeds the initial supply. While the majority of pre-orders will be delivered to customers on September 21, many are scheduled to be delivered in October. Indeed, a quick peek at Apple's website shows that the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models of the iPhone 5 are showing a ship time of '2-3 weeks' no matter what network you're on.

The iPhone 5 was announced last week and packs a 1GHz dual-core Apple A6 SoC, 1GB of RAM, up to 64GB of storage, a 4.0-inch Retina display, an 8-megapixel camera in the back with a 1.2-megapixel lens up front, WiFi, and support for 4G LTE. It's due out on Friday.
