i-Phones may upstage 3G wireless

Conventional wisdom has it that third generation wireless phones will finally put an end to the user confusion and settle, once and for all, what phones we should all be using. Some analysts are saying, however, that 3G has been so long in coming that Java-enabled 2.5G may steal the market before the new technology can get a foothold.

Japan's second-generation phones, especially NTT DoCoMo's i-mode Web-linked service, provide Web access on business card-sized color screens with a variety of organizer functions. More features will be added soon including MP3 capabilities and games that can be played either on the phone or a Sony PlayStation. In the US, where WAP has failed to live up to its promise, i-mode could conceivably fill the breach.
