Hyundai targets graphics

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Hyundai Electronics Industries has introduced a 64Mbit 166MHz double-data-rate SDRAM for dedicated graphics chipset memory.

The DDR chip has a data transfer rate of 333Mbps and can be linked together to achieve a bandwidth of 5.3GB per second, far exceeding conventional SDRAM graphics memory which achieves typical bandwidth of 2.7 to 3.2 GB per second, company officials said.

Because of the greater throughput available with the double-clocked SDRAM, Hyundai and several other suppliers are projecting that DDR SDRAM will replace single-data-rate memory chips next year as the preferred choice for graphics frame buffers.

Full production of the chip is expected in August, at a unit price of about $14.
