Hitachi to shut down U.S. PC operations
Hitachi will "liquidate" its Hitachi PC Corp. U.S. subsidiary, transferring its operations and personnel to Hitachi Data Systems.
Over time, the Hitachi PC name will be eclipsed by the Hitachi Data Systems brand, which emphasizes large scale computers and PC servers.
Hitachi was ranked No. 10 in the U.S. notebook market in the second and third quarters of 1998, having shipped about 170,000 notebooks last year.
Hitachi will continue to offer its current line of notebooks through March but will "evaluate" the product line after that, officials said.
