Hitachi Stacks up SDRAM for Consumer Devices

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Hitachi Semiconductor just told us about two multi-chip module (MCM) series, the HJ93D1 and the HJ931. The new MCMs in a stack configuration combine a SuperH microprocessor (MPU) and multiple SDRAM chips in a compact package. The HJ93D1 series can have a 100 MHz SH3-DSP SH7729R MPU with two 8- MB SDRAMs in a small (13 x 13 x 1. mm) package that fits in the same circuit board area as a Chip-Scale Package (CSP) MPU. Hitachi thinks the configuration's small footprint should make it an attractive option for small handheld digital consumer products. The HJ93D1 MCM contains a SH3-DSP series RISC/DSP MPU with a digital signal processor (DSP) and voice and image data compression/expansion processing capabilities. The HJ931 MCM has an SH-3 series RISC MPU with low power consumption. The HJ93D1BP will sample for around $45 this November and the HJ931BP will sample for about $42 in the same time frame.
