Hitachi shows prototype Web glasses
Hitachi Ltd., in conjunction with industrial instrument maker Shimadzu Corp., Colorado MicroDisplay Inc., and Xybernaut Corp., is working to develop commercial versions of the Web glasses Bill Gates demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show. Hitachi's prototype is based on Colorado MicroDisplay's high-resolution 2.5-ounce monocular microdisplay and interface chipset. The PC-compatible, SVGA (800x600) monocular display supports 18-bit color images. It can be used with eyeglasses and the image corresponds to a 13" screen located two feet from the eyes. The 8-ounce control unit uses a Hitachi 32-bit SH4 RISC processor and provides wireless Web access, instant power-on and a Type II CompactFlash slot.
