Hitachi launches 'robust' 2.5 inch harddrive
Chicago (IL) - Hitachi Global Storage announced a new version of its 2.5 inch hadrddrive family. Compared to its predecessor, the Travelstar 4K40 reaches just similar levels of performance and capacity, but offers increased reliability.
Most users of notebooks are happy with performance and capacity of their harddrives. At least this is the opinion of Hitachi, which markets its newest mobile harddrive not by highlighting higher data transfer speeds, seek times and more room for a more documents, music, and pictures.
Instead, the new Travelstar 4K40 offers more reliability and data security, according to the company. The drive reduces components by using only one platter, only two instead of four chipsets, a shock resistency of 300G/2 ms in operation (1000 G/1 ms when idle), an increased number of load/unload cycles (600,000) as well as a different design of the arm. All features decrease the risk of data loss, Hitachi said.
The drive is available in capacities of 20 GByte, 30 GByte and 40 GByte. The platters rotate at 4200 rpm. Maximum recording density is 65 Gbit per square inch, latency is rated at 7.1 ms. Pricing was not yet available.
