HDTV sellers eye broadband

by - source: Tom's Hardware

While mass adoption of high definition television has failed to occur, many of those who invested in the technology hope that PCs and broadband will create new markets for their products. 2netFX, 3Com, and TeraLogic have joined to work on HDTV-enabling long-distance applications for the next-generation broadband Internet. Though still expensive, Sony Electronics has a flat-panel 42", 1024 x 1024 pixel monitor with 160-degree viewing and switchable 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio as well as an internal scan converter capable of SDTV, HDTV and UXGA. Sampo America has a similar product, also aimed at corporate customers. Hitachi, however, is aiming its 61" HDTV set at DirecTV satellite subscribers who have considerable HDTV programming. Ravisent Technologies and Mediamatics have all-software DTV engines that will let PC makers add HDTV capabilities.
