LCD Rear Projection

These displays are based on the same technology as the previously-mentioned LCD displays, but the difference is that with rear-projection, the LCD panels are projected by light onto a screen. LCD projection televisions have the same attributes as flat-panel LCDs in that they have great colour and resolution, but contrast performance is usually not as good as leading DLP or LCOS displays. However, each generation of LCD display seems to improve in this regard.

LCD projection displays are still susceptible to the dreaded "screen door" effect, where the pixel structure becomes visible. Also, it is not a good sign for the future of LCD projection displays that there are no 1,080p offerings to speak of. In fact, one of the major LCD projection vendors, Sony, is starting to sell 1,080p LCOS displays. LCD rear projection displays are currently priced similarly to DLP displays.

Pros: Vibrant colours, good resolution, low prices.
Cons: Contrast not quite as good as DLP/LCOS, screen door effect, no 1080p.
Who's it for? Resolution-minded viewers looking for a good deal; "rainbow-itis" sufferers.
