Handspring and RIM reach Agreement
Research In Motion (RIM), the manufacturer of Blackberry, an email handheld device, has reached an out-of-court agreement with Handspring Inc. concerning Handspring's Treo handheld Communicator. In September, RIM filed a patent infringement action, claiming that Handspring's Treo contained parts that violated RIM's keyboard patents. Under the agreement, Handspring will license RIM's keyboard patents and pay royalties to RIM for their use. Still pending are four outstanding patent infringement claims by RIM against Good Technology Inc., a competitor planning to launch a similar handheld device by the end of this year.
