Valve Wants to Make Half-Life Movie Themselves

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Now I sort of want to see a Team Fortress comedy instead.

Like many great successful fictional properties, be they novels, comic books or video games, Hollywood comes knocking looking to cash in on the story.

There's nothing wrong with that, as the films have given us wonderful depictions of comic books and even amusement park rides, but Valve isn't keen on having any outside help on making the Half-Life movie.

While the set up of Black Mesa and City 17 seem perfect for a sci-fi movie, Valve's Gabe Newell feels that nobody in Hollywood would be able to make the Half-Life movie that the developer would want to see.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Newell related a time after the release of the first Half-Life: "There was a whole bunch of meetings with people from Hollywood. Directors down there wanted to make a Half-Life movie and stuff, so they’d bring in a writer or some talent agency would bring in writers, and they would pitch us on their story. And their stories were just so bad. I mean, brutally, the worst. Not understanding what made the game a good game, or what made the property an interesting thing for people to be a fan of."

Newell made it clear that it's not a talent problem, as he admits to being a World of Warcraft player, but not one that is excited to see what Sam Raimi does with the movie.

"That’s when we started saying ‘Wow, the best thing we could ever do is to just not do this as a movie, or we’d have to make it ourselves.’ And I was like, ‘Make it ourselves? Well that’s impossible.’ But the Team Fortress 2 thing, the Meet The Team shorts, is us trying to explore that."

How would you feel about a Half-Life movie done like the Team Fortress 2 series?

I suppose I might think about it if valve make it as they don't do 'half assed' on anything....unlike EA.

They would need to put more effort on the graphical side, not to say TF2 clips are bad its just I don't see them fending the likes of Pixar on the big screen.

And it would need to be serious with touches of humour like the game, TF2 clips are well stupid - and that's fine for TF2 just not half life.

Heh might come out sometime after HL3...so what 2022? With valves current HL2:E3 timing and all.

This is actually good IMO.

#1. The TF2 ads were only made for 720p, for the TF2 style of thinking (humorous) and for us behind the PC screens. So of course they are gonna try to make the movie Cinema-Screen worthy.

#2. If a Hollywood director goes and makes the movie there will always be the chance of people saying "It wasn't true to the games. I think they did it wrong". If Valve does it, then of course it will be true to the games.

#3. If they fail it we will *insert devious punishment here* >=3

#4. THIS BETTER NOT GET IN THE WAY OF HL2:E3/HL3 >=O xD

#5. Are they gonna use real actors? Or animated?

#6. What do u guys think?

Well i just think that Hollywood is about making all action movies into 12 rated and U, and shoving loadsa half naked women in to stir up the vibrations in young men's pants.

This Half life movie or series, should in theory be a good one - if that is actually made by the Valve team. And one that would be true to the game story. I hope they do make one, as I will look forward in watching it. Good thing and thumbs up to Valve in refusing Hollywood to put their smelly fingers into it.

Ah ha! That's why EP3 is taking forever - Gabe's spending all his bloody time on WoW!

Christ we're not gonna see any more HL until he's completed Catacylsm :-(

I don't think a Half Life movie would work. You can't improve on what Valve have already done, and if you recreated the story verbatim there's no surprise for us (and we might as well just go back and play the games again), but if you rework or write a story "based on" (like the Max Payne movie) then all the HL fans will complain it's been messed with.

The environment is plenty big enough to do world stories though (like "Escape from City 17") but then there's no Gordon Freeman, so it's not Half Life.

The only thing I can think that might work would be a Half Life reboot, but Valve would need to be very, very careful. And to be honest, how can you reboot "scientist caught in an experiment gone wrong, fights way out of science lab against weird dimensional aliens, captured and turned into interdimensional weapon". That's what Half Life is, doing ANYTHING ELSE isn't Half Life.

This could turn out well being valve. But i've never been a big fan of these ideas. More so about facebook/piratebay/google the movie. Also was never a fan of the doom movie, but I love valve and they could make this work.

I'd look forward to watching it anyhow.

At least they got the right guy for the script (being it as the creator of Half Life) but uhh... comparing the production to TF2 intro clips? That'd be like making The X-Files done by Seth Macfarlane.

Oh god. I'm intrigued now....
