Nvidia Touts (Quiet) 'Fastest DX11 GPU on Planet!'

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Next title up for grabs: fastest DX11 GPU in galaxy!

Ahh, video card evolution is such an exciting thing. The basic duopoly that Nvidia and AMD have create a great back-and-forth competition that in the end benefits the consumer (and industrial markets). While AMD's been carrying the DirectX 11 crown for a while, Nvidia is looking to snatch it from them with what it is touting as the "Fastest DX11 GPU on Planet!" – and who wouldn't want to have that?

Not only will it be the fastest, but Nvidia promises it to be one of the quietest high-performance part. At a recent PDX LAN 16.5 event just past, Nvidia gave a few small details about its upcoming flagship DX11 GPU. Nvidia wouldn't reveal the name of the p

Besides just being really fast, Nvidia says it will be one of its quietest modern GPUs to date. It'll definitely be quieter than the GTX 480, but it'll be even quieter than the old GTX 285.

The sound-friendly cooler design is thanks to vapor chamber cooling, which utilizes water. The heat generated by the GPU boils the water, which then sends it up towards the heatsink fins. The water then cools and condenses then gets sent back down to the GPU plate again.

This boost in efficiency means that the upcoming Nvidia graphics card will run at around 47dBA under load of Crysis Warhead.

GTX485? Nice to see a decent reference cooler, but power draw is still a turn-off for me if it's still at insane levels.

Gigabyte managed to reduce power consumption with their 470 Super OC so let's hope this new card is a properly-matured GF100 or even a new chip with mature Fermi design.

not GTX485, this is probably GTX580 they're launching tomorrow.

Interesting cooler design there, it'll most likely still run rediculously hot as I'm betting this is to compensate for otherwise inoperable temps...

Also didnt the 285 use the same reference cooler as the 260? If so then it wasnt exactly quiet.

Looking at the supposed specs, it's a full-fat Fermi GF100, probably refined into a GF110. That makes it the rumoured GTX 485, and Nvidia did their usual rebranding game to make it sound like a totally new chip.

GTX 580 = GTX 485 as far as I can see.

Still, what's in a name? The GTX 460 I want will hopefully come down in price, and (power requirements permitting) I'll have the top-flight GPU I've wanted for a while AND CUDA.

Was about damn time for water-cooling systems to get a little bit more common. Still, not even close to what I was expecting. I mean... only about 1-2db lower? cmon!

and if it still is power-hungry and too hot, I wouldn't count it as a step forward.

Thats a nice cooling idea, but has anyone noticed that on ATX boards the cooler is always upside down? its the same with heat pipes, they all try to make them look good, but they only work good on Btx and company.
when you do it upside down, the place where the water is boiling is on the top, but heat goes up not down, so you have the place where the water should be condensating, boiling it even more... and on the bottom you just keep the cool water sitting there near the cold and away from the heat source.
They should just thrown in 1Kg of copper and get it over with...
