Grove: Will Merced work?

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Intel Chairman Andy Grove says Merced will yield silicon "in a few weeks time." At that point, he said, "We will know then whether it works or it doesn't."

Merced, the code-name for the company's first 64-bit processor, was shown running the Linux kernel in a demonstration Grove and Intel senior vice president Sean Maloney gave at the LinuxWorld trade show in Silicon Valley.

Maloney also announced that IBM has joined the Trillian group, which is porting Linux to IA-64, along with SGI, Hewlett-Packard Co., Cygnus Solutions Inc. and Intel. Trillian will release the source for the Linux IA-64 kernel in the first quarter of next year.

The Intel execs said the company will make Merced servers available to prominent Linux test beds, such as SUSE, TurboLinux, Caldera, RedHat and VA Research Inc.
