IBM Shows 155GHz Graphene Transistor

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Get ready for some really fast radios.

IBM has reached a new milestone in its research of graphene transistors. We learned over a year ago that IBM had achieved a radio-frequency graphene transistor with the cut-off frequency of 100 GHz. Now IBM has cranked it up even higher – hitting 155 GHz.

Graphene is a single atom-thick layer of carbon atoms bonded in a hexagonal honeycomb-like arrangement. This two-dimensional form of carbon has unique electrical, optical, mechanical and thermal properties and its technological applications are being explored intensely by IBM.

While the 155 GHz number is mighty impressive, it's not really the sort of transistor that's going to be immediately of interest to those looking for the next big personal computing technology.

IBM's work on the graphene transistor is part of the DARPA program to develop high performance radio transistors. Graphene is better suited to analog signals, as it does not have the discrete on/off characteristics of silicon.

Would of to see how this would score on benchmarks against today best CPUs. Here's to dreaming :)

Its not a CPU, its just a transistor.

It's one transistor CPU :D

Well, let's say they manage to make graphene CPU-s. How much will they cost, will they be desktop/mobile ready, how many ghz will they the offer?

But will it run cr... actually it wouldn't would it

Would this replace CPUs in the future? ps why they are always showing off stuff like that and they never release them for the computers? it can make some serious progress, you probably won't have to bother to upgrade yer 'cpu'for a decade or some...

Dufus guys... The CPU's use Silicon because it has an on off state with a 0.7 volt differential. This means that it can work in a digital way. Graphine is linear and does not have an on off state. This means that it is useless in digital applications like PC's and Digital based electronic products. The only way around this is to add impurities and dope them like a Diode so they have at least a Semiconductor charateristics and a voltage difference between an "ON" and "OFF" state.

Adding impurities would drop the Frequency drastically.
