AMD Considers Dropping Low-end Discrete Graphics

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

No need for any of that with integrated graphics, says AMD.

AMD's release of Llano signaled a new level of graphical performance for the entry-level and mainstream computing market.

Computers built around AMD's latest Fusion chips all come with decent GPU functionality that's integrated right into the same CPU package. No longer would system builders need to factor in an additional entry-level video card for some World of Warcraft action, which is a win-win situation for both the vendor and consumer.

Of course, AMD also makes video cards, and this new processor package innovation could mean that demand for its more modest discrete entries will fall as a result of the more capable Fusion chips.

For that reason, AMD is considering the removal of its low-end discrete graphics products.

Speaking about its low-end offerings, interim chief executive Thomam Seifert told analysts and investors that "parts of this business will be cannibalised and the low-end discrete GPUs will be replaced with Fusion-type products," according to Tech Radar.

Doh, because nobody buys a low end AMD/ATI card to pair with low end processors which don't have reasonable "light gaming" ability? Way to hand the market to the green team!

Just an opinion gauging release I reckon,
once they feel the backlash of skint builders who cant afford to upgrade to an integrated system or just plain dont want to, they'll see how much revenue is at risk and figure out whether or not to go ahead and can the baseline cards

A this isn't news and B its just Toms getting a cheap advertising click "kching" $$$$ on the back of others hard work.
Next sentence reads

Quote :Seifert didn't set a timescale for the move away from discrete graphics, but did say he was looking at the long-term future of the company.

But hey had this small addition have been included there would be no need to check out the "story" and Toms wouldn't get the revenue.

Seriously. Toms can i have a Job, if all i have to do is link to items already on the web with a quick cover note, well i can do that all day long.
heck i give a better more informed and useful service than that in most of my forum posts, I'm modest as well.

Renaming low-end parts to seem like mid-rangers FTW!

I think this is a win-win situation.
Drop the R&D fees for low-end, and develop better and cheaper APUS. If they can develop one circa £60, then it's a definite buy for any builders.

If they release a couple of viable chips for AM2+ and AM3 boards then yes, I'd agree with that May1, let people squeeze a little more out of their gear before having to upgrade
