Gnutella creating Web search protocol

Gnutella developers, the people who have inspired the entertainment industry's ire by designing a decentralized peer-to-peer file-sharing system, have announced the initiation of an effort to establish an open-source search engine protocol. Called "gPulp" for general Purpose Location Protocol, it is intended to become the standard network search tool. GPulp would search across networks, as opposed to searching databases of indexed pages, as existing search engines do. At least one open-source advocate says gPulp could completely change the Internet.
