Gemtek showcases Skype phone and wireless firewall
Quite a number of Skype phones were on display at this year’s Computex, including the SkyDect phone from communications specialist Gemtek Technology. This unit was characterized by the company as a voice-over-instant-messenger (VoIM) phone utilizing the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).
When not in use, it sits in a base station, which is itself connected to a host PC over USB. The idea is that this frees the Skype user from having to sit at a PC, using a headset and microphone. The SkyDect handset is able to synchronize with the Skype software on the host PC and display a contact list. SkypeOut dialing is supported.
