Nvidia Shows GeForce GTX 480 ''Hair'' Rendering

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Nvidia shows off how Fermi will make flowing hair look in fancy tech demo.

When new GPUs are in development, it's not uncommon for there to be a myriad of tech demos that show all the new realism features afforded by the new technology.

One such steady improvement seen by increasingly powerful graphics hardware is more realistic hair. No longer is hair just a few triangles stuck together, giving 3D characters a look that can only be achieved in real life with an entire can of hairspray.

Netbooknews captured this Nvidia tech demo at GDC, which shows off Fermi's fancy hair rendering prowess.

It really won't be long before real virtual girlfriends exist.

It'll be a sad day when the nerd race wipes itself out.

For the love of...

Dear nVidia

As much as I love staring a box art and sitting through umpteen videos puporting to show just how great your card is, they can't make up for one tiny yet salient fact.

I STILL don't see any cards for sale!

Maybe if you stopped all the useless, say-nothing-useful-about-the-card promotion, you might be able to spare enough cash to actually release the bloody thing! If only to force a price drop on ATI's part.

In short - we're really getting sick of the wait. Piss, or get off the pot.

The thing is its one thing to render just one head on the screen with no background and no other characters but are you telling me that it could render that in a game? hmm i dont think so

Woaah, hair rendering. I'm sure ATI is shaking in it's boots!

I don't think this is specific to nVidia. I think the process used is part of DX11, which means that any DX11 card should be able to render the hair as well. The speed of the processor, and driver optimizations can obviously make a difference, I would think. So unless nVidia is planning on creating a non-standard, proprietary code pathway just for nVidia hair, this is something that ATI can render as well. Either a game engine follows the DX standards, or it uses something outside of spec, that will only run when using a modified or proprietary API, rendering it incompatible with even older nVidia cards. So, this is 'gravy', meaning almost no one will code for it, or it's just part of DX11, which any DX11 could render.
