Gateway adds Blu-ray drive, OC graphics card to enthusiast PC
Irvine (CA) - With Dell and HP having established a presence in then enthusiast PC market, the third largest PC maker in U.S. is getting more serious about computers that deliver more than just the basics. Gateway has added a Blu-ray drive and factory overclocked Nvidia graphics card option to its FX series of desktop PCs.
The Blu-ray drive complements the $300 HD DVD drive that has been offered for several weeks. It is offered for $600 in all versions but the entry-level FX530B model. PC systems with a Blu-ray drive start at about $1800.
"Factory overclocked" Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS and GTX cards are available on all systems. It is unclear just how overclocked these cards are, as the system specs provided by Gateway are identical with the specs of the Nvidia reference cards. The GTS version is offered for $300, the GTX model is priced at $600.
A fully option Gateway FX system including a 3.2 GHz quad-core processor, 1.5 TB of hard drive space, 4 GB of memory, a 24" monitor as well as a HD optical drive will top out at around $7000.
