Galileo global positioning network on track
Europe's transport ministers have approved initial funding of 100 million Euros for their own global navigation satellite network Galileo. The European Space Agency will reportedly commit a similar sum. Meant to eliminate dependence on the US's Global Positioning System and Russia's GLONASS network, despite the fact that the GPS costs nothing to European users, Galileo will be designed to be more reliable and have more features than the 30-year-old GPS. The system is expected to have 30 satellites in orbit by 2008.
