Fujitsu, Siemens join to conquer European PC market

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Japan's Fujitsu Ltd. and Germany's Siemens AG are teaming their European computer businesses, creating the world's third-largest computer seller.

In terms of European PC sales, the Fujitsu-Siemens combination would rank second behind Compaq, displacing Dell Computer Corp. from the No. 2 spot, according to IDC's first-quarter figures.

The venture, to be called Fujitsu Siemens Computers, will start October 1. It will combine Fujitsu Computers (Europe) Ltd., which has annual sales of about $2.07 billion and 1,600 workers, with Siemens Computer Systems Division, which has an annual revenue of about $4.13 billion and 8,000 workers.

The deal offers Fujitsu a foothold in Europe and gives Siemens a full line of personal computers.

With this joint venture, Fujitsu and Siemens aim to reach sales of more than $7.85 billion and PC shipments of more than $4.96 billion in 2000.
