If you’re willing to look there are free replacements for practically any commercially available software you could care to replace, barring the highly specific. The fact is, with so many open source applications becoming more and more successful, there’s no reason not to entrust your day-to-day computing to free applications rather than pay for software.
Of course, the real step would be to simply move to an entirely free operating system, but let’s face it, it’s impractical to expect average users to migrate OS for purely miserly reasons. For the vast majority of us, the best option is to stick with our OS of choice and simply try to get something for nothing whenever possible...
