Hey, I just decided to start folding at home. Is there anything else i have to do other than just type in the team number to join this team?

Also, i checked my score i think it was, and it came up with a huge list of teams i'd donated to, including hardocp, xtremesystems, and others, even though its clearly says in my screen team : 40051.

This thread is massive and i don't have time to read it all, so sorry if this kind of thing has already been answered somewhere.

PS. THis takes longer than i thought. I had it running all night and its got 43/250 frames? done all night.

PSS. I heard about doing this on my 8800, is that possible yet? and if so, wheer can i find that client?

Don't worry about finding your stats until a few hours after you've handed in your first WU. So long as your team number says 40051, you'll be folding with us.

It generally takes a few days to finish a WU. There are a few things you can do to make sure you're optimising your points generation. See this thread for more info.

The 8800 is not yet included in the GPU-based folding@home client. So far, only ATi cards of certain types have been included, but I'm hoping that next-gen GPUs from both companies will be added to the folding project soon.

How does the score work? I see people with like 100 000 points, how much is one WU worth ususally?

WUs can be worth a couple hundred points all the way up to 1760. You can see how many points each WU is worth on the project summary page.

The WUs that are worth the most points are for the SMP clients. You tend to get the better-valued points if you opt for BigWU (>5 MB WUs) and advanced methods.

This one is 2417, and its says its worth 500 points for 100 frames. But my thing says 250 frames. Will i get 1250 points or what happens?

The frames thing is a little confusing, because the term seems to be used for a couple different concepts. The WU you're working will be worth 500 points when you hand it in.

How many frames a WU had used to matter before Stanford switched to saving work progress at set time intervals (default is 15 minutes). Work used to be backed up only at the completion of a frame, so larger WUs would be given more frames than small ones so that the work would be backed up regularly. Timed intervals solved a lot of issues they had balancing between risk of interruptions and overhead cost of backing up data.

So what are you using to get 2000 points per day??? 8O

I've got a question, I just started using F@H today and the program just starts up when I log onto windows. I've read that you can set it to be manually opened but it doesn't seem to work. :?

I believe it was checking the "Ask before using network" box to set.

I have 3 computers doing Folding@Home - you can see the number here. I generally run them 24/7, but I've been turning my desktop off lately while we have visitors staying in the office/guest room. All machines are dual-core, and I run the SMP client on each. I will be going down to two machines soon, as one is being sold. I might even go down to one in the hottest months, as my desktop is an overclocked PD820 and it puts out a lot of heat for the air conditioning to deal with.

Without the SMP client, I would probably be earning around 500 points/day.

The folding client will automatically start if you've selected "Add this client as a service". If you wish to stop this, go into Controll Panel >> Administritive Tools >> Services and kill the folding@home client from there (don't use Task Manager). Then, re-start the client using the command line and use the flag "-config". Disable the "client as a service" option, and from then on the folding@home client will only run when you start it yourself.

Since you are talking about frames done it seems to me that you are using the graphical or regular command line client (the command line client is slightly faster.

You really should upgrade to the SMP client. You will get an average of 400-850 PPD on that client as opposed to 250-300 PPD with 2 of the regular client (since you have 2 cores).

As for the list of teams that you have donated to, there may be more than one person using your name. You may want to check if your name is unique on the folding system, I would not be suprised if it was not as they have 732,583 users in the system. My user name for folding is Aragorn1024.

P.S. Everyone who has 2 or more cores in their system should be using the SMP client. (Virtual cores from HT{Hyper Threaded} processors don't count. They will be very slow.)

Now this SMP client, do i have to restart the work i've already done? If so i'll wait till this WU is done, but if not i'll do it now. Also, will that make my system really slow? So far I've been playing (this will sound weird and stupid but i like it) BF2142 with WMP playing music in the background, and the folding, along with msn and w/e else. My cpu usage is 100% with all that, but i don't experience slow downs. When not in game, the usuage is only 100 on core 0, and like 14 on core 1. So i'm wondering with this smp will i have to turn off everything else or will it adjust the resources so i can run other things?

If you switch to the SMP client you will always have your processor pegged at 100% utilized. You still will not experience slow downs because FAH only uses your computers idle cycles. If anything else needs to use the processor FAH backs off and let the other programs have it, when they are done (or not using the processor for a bit) FAH will use the cycles that no other program asks for.

You will have to start over as the FAH SMP client does different work. However for each hour you run the SMP client you will get as many points as about 6 hours for the normal client so unless your current WU is 80% or more complete you will get more done (and get more points for yourself and the team) by switching to the SMP client imediately. Right now you are only using 1 core to fold the other is idle unless you are loading the machine heavily.

This client is a lot differnt. It doesn't have the visual of the protiens and its in a command prompt. Plus it fails everytime.

It's not normal for it to fail every time. what is the error message that you're getting?

If you're trying to use the SMP client in XP, you have to have a .Net framework installed, and you have to follow some extra installation directions - available at the folding@home website.

Ok, this person needs to be "quarentined". Anyone have any ideas how well the ATI R600 folds?
