Anything that affects the finances of a Publically traded corporation
must be disclosed. Free upgrades of HD-DVRs to thousands would surely do
that.

I'll call retention twice a day between now and then.

"... would surely do that." reads like speculation.

Can't you be more specific?

You could start with the "public" announcements from DirecTV that will
affect the finances of a publicly traded corporation. When did DirecTV
indicate there would be free upgrades of HD-DVRs to thousands?
Are you guessing about free upgrades? Did someone in a position
of authority at DirecTV tell you that you will receive a free upgrade?
Have you received a shipping notice of your free upgrade?

To be honest, though, it's not enough money to even bother with. There
are less than 250,000 HR10-250 units in service, and even if everyone got
a completely free unit that costs (not sells for, but *costs*) $500, it's
only $125M.

DirecTVs' costs for upgrading security card were over $20/receiver for over
20M receivers...that's $400M right there.

Giving already-paying users a receiver that can get more channels (and thus
get more revenue per month) is a no-brainer compared to a card swap that
resulted in very few new subscriptions from previous pirates.

Two year contract, instead of one year required for upgrades.

There is nothing in any ads (at least locally) for DirecTV
receivers/new installs that say a 2-year committment is required. All
mention just one year, like before.

Upgrades to "Advanced equipment" translation HDTV receivers -
now generate a 2 year committment

Except for "Advanced Equipment" - translation: HDTV receivers

----"Has ANYONE got anything in writing from DirecTv in response to a
question? A response to how a particular service will cost (including
all the taxes and bits they forgot to advertise)?
(They seem to REALLY hate that question,so I never subscribed since I
never got an answer).
A response to a request for instructions on how to use a hacked access
card? (even if it's a disconnect notice or a nasty letter from a lawyer
about stealing service).A statement that HBO isn't free, not even for
senior citizens? A DMCA takedown notice? A subpoena?"----

Reply:
By your phraseology, and construction you sound like an attorney to me
yourself.....but I am only guessing.
Do you expect that the average layman CSR is going to have knowledge of
legal issues? Or even a Technical Services Representative for that
matter? They are only LAYMEN when it comes to some of the clearly LEGAL
issues you bring up in your diatribe.
When the average consumer calls, the issues of policy concerning the
Digital Millennium Copyright Act is not going to be in the minds or even
available on either side.
And why would you expect senior citizens to get free programming? Some
of those people are richer than the under 55 crowd and can afford their
own HBO.I get tired of hearing that they should be some kind of
privileged class.
To most of your questions, the source to most of them would be to
contact the LEGAL DEPARTMENT of DirecTV corporate would not you think?
As to using a hacked access card, asking that kind of question would be
a little absurd would not it? "Oh,yes sir, that particular card was
previously used for theft of service, but we can go ahead and authorize
it for you anyway!"
GET REAL!
And as to advertising qualifications, the ADVERTISING department is who
you should contact there at DirecTV.CSR's are there just to sell
programming and tech service reps are to solve TECHNICAL
problems,nothing else.
Lay people who probably only make a small salary on the phone are not
the ones to ask.

Programming Commitment:
Customers purchasing a DIRECTV Standard System agree to a 12-month
programming commitment. Customers purchasing a DIRECTV HD, DIRECTV DVR, or
DIRECTV HD DVR System agree to a 24-month programming commitment.
Programming commitments require that a subscription to a qualifying
programming package be maintained, uninterrupted, for the entire duration of
the programming commitment.

This seems to be only for new customers, since I haven't had any change
in my committment even though I have purchased several items that should
qualify for a 2-year committment.

Also, from this, it's not an HD thing...it's anything other than a "standard"
receiver.
