$300 quad core PC, light gaming

Forum Homebuilt Systems : New Build $300 quad core PC, light gaming

Word :    Username :

Looking to build a quad-core PC with low power consumption, used mainly for streaming netflix movies, and watching not more than 720p video. Also for very light gaming (sc, possibly sc2 when it comes out). Can power a 24" monitor.

I'd like to keep it under $300 for the box. Any suggestions?

This is about as low as you can get price wise with a quad core CPU. Dropping down to an Athlon II X2 will shave off $25-40.

Thanks for the response. But what about a gpu?

Reply to jackbravo

This build uses on-board graphics, which is fine for light gaming, but you will want to get a discrete GPU eventually, something like a HD4670 is a good choice for casual light gaming, and it won't break the bank.

Thanks very much. I had forgotten about the 4670.

Just out of curiosity, why the quad requirement? From what you have listed above, I'd go dual core instead. Quads use up more power to run and streaming and light gaming doesn't need or more accurately, won't use 4 cores.

This is the same power as the 4670, but cheaper w/ free shipping.

And the phenom 1s are crap, avoid them. For your budget though, a prebuilt might be the best way to go especially if you need the OS.

Might get better suggestions if you edit your post and follow the format in the link in my sig.

is the phenom 9100e a phenom 1s?

it does use about 65W of power...hard to beat that, even with dual core.

Reply to jackbravo

Yeah the 4 diget phenoms are the first series. The e series are all the energy efficent models. But the performance on the phenom 1s is marginal unless you can accept their slow speeds. But what is going to demand a quad core?

Nothing. I've just noticed that quad-core systems are snappier. Windows open up faster, multiple windows at once, etc...

Thanks for the info.

Found an old case, so I don't need that. I don't see a reason to have a dvd player. I have winxp, so I can install that.
