Your old hand *knowledge* and **advice** is one of the reasons the THG Forum is a laughing stock out there on the 'internets'.

oh....and one more piece of info for your hopper!!!: Your eye can't distinguish those framerates above 70 fps!

Pure 100% unadulterated FUD. With a high quality non-interlaced display you can see well above 120 FPS with a matching refresh rate. The ultimate level is unknown. The real limit today is in the hardware, not our eyes.

... my top quality Samsung 19" LCD max refresh rate is 75. I don't think most monitors have higher rates!

Please don't let something like the facts get in the way of your arguement.

...Basically, all the conventional wisdom about what cpu for what graphics card has been wrong, and the new understanding appeared here in the forum in my posts months ago now.

Of course! You are truly a legend . . . in your own mind. . . .

... what people shouldwatch is the minimum fps, not maximum anyone can get bursts of 1235325230 fps for a single milisecond but if your minimum keeps going below the 30 threehold on strategy or 60 in fps, your gameplay will be severely affected.

Yes!

As a courtesy to those others who have wondered about the framerate/refresh issue here in the thread, I'll offer 1 link to clear up the fog in one post regarding confusing "response time" and "refresh rate", but encourage everyone interested to do their own research.

Basically, 90%+ of us use LCD monitors that cost under $500. These monitors have refresh rates typically at 80 and under.

This is a meaningful limit:

"It's important to realize that despite what the FRAMETIME option in D3 displays, if the numbers it shows are higher than your Refresh Rate, then your ACTUAL FRAMES PER SECOND IS EQUAL TO YOUR REFRESH RATE!

In other words, if you Refresh at 80Hz and D3 says you are getting 120fps, then you can only ever see 80 of those 120 frames per second!!! That means, you could spend a fortune on the latest motherboard, CPU, RAM and video card, only to have half that value wiped out by plugging it into a crappy monitor. Unfortunately, most PC sales people have no idea about this however, so they can claim [sarcasm] ignorance [/sarcasm] of this whole issue. "

-------

Regarding the stuff about "headaches" and framerates, one can only compare to the refresh rate of a book or magazine in good natural light, which is....quite...high. :)

Yes, like anyone who reads for more than 10 hours in a day, I've gotten headaches reading at those rather....high....framerates, heh heh.

But, we all need to be aware that it is in the financial interest of many sites to sell hardware. If they can convince us that we need something (usually more expensive), then they can make more profits.

For this reason, any assertions about benefits of expensive stuff really needs more than only a couple of hardware site links, IMO.

If I don't show back up here, it's because my time is very limited, and I cannot chase down every bit of stuff someone throws out trying to show off.

If someone has great info, by all means, educate us all with detailed stuff, and links, when you can.

I won't be responding to troll posts however, and since I'm in other forums, will be back here only when it's rewarding to me, of course.

saying the CPU will not limit the GPU at all resolutions is 100% wrong ,
increasing the resolution SHIFTS the bottleneck from the GPU to the CPU , but it doesn't CANCEL it. for example with such CPU u'll get around 20 fps in resolutions from (640x480 - 1024X768) in some title , as u crank up the resolution ur FPS will start to decrease ( ~17 @ 1280X1024 , 12 @ 1600 X1200 ..... etc )
mean while with a modern C2D (e8500 for example) u'll get around 35% - 60% increase at lower resolutions (that of course depends on the nature of the game and it's engine). that is to say around 40 fps in resolutions from (640X480 - 1024X768) and as u crank up ur resolution again .. ur FPS will start to decline again ( ~ 35 @ 1280X1024 , 25 @ 1600x1200 ... etc)

i'm not sure about the 3700 , but if it was a single core processor , it'll be a big bottleneck as most games today are multi thread optimized, even a P4 with 2 mg l2 cash @ 3.75 ghz (my cpu) will be a big bottleneck

I score 15,6 k @ 3dmark 06 ? id deff say that it is pretty much a bottleneck, at lower resolutions it will still be fine enough, I would suggest saving some money and wait :)

thats with a Q6600 and 8800GTS 512
