But they wont, they make profits thanx to MS, cuz Imsure they have some deals over here and there + Windows still is the most used OS in the whole world

That's my dream, someday make a cross-platform kick4r53 game (and make some money out of it if posible, but not @ windows-we-let-your-wallets-dry kind of style, that's why I asked you and bmouring about programming in other thread, I have some friedns willing to help with the modelling+texturing+animation part (after they learn how to, except oine who is a photoshopper) but none , nothing, anything about coding...*sigh* being surrounded by mecha enginerring students isn't good for programming.....

In a couple of months I'll have vacations, so I hope to get N3KK1D MODELL1NG SKILLZ when that happens and to lure more souls into my ambitious project, hopefully in a couple of years it'll be done (GOD, TUX, PLZ HELPME!!!!!!!), after all, the first command & conquer took 3 years of developement.

Most likely, it will remain as a dream.......but I hope it turns out to be true

Ok, more problems on the way :p

I was going to install the ATi drivers, first the file's md5 was bad, so I redownloaded and when building the package it told me that it wouldn't support my system (AMD64) so the package was not created, any clues on that?

There could be a few problems here, but here's a fine guide on doing exactly what you're trying to do.

Good luck.

Yeah, I figured you'd be able to point out a fine resource, just need to keep plugging along to get my post count up, and spread the goodness that is Linux.

@7H4_D00D3, I know this seems like a good bit of effort (and it is, partly because you went with ATI instead of nVidia), but once the core stuff's set up, you'll be living the high life.

Unfortunately ATI is not very linux friendly. nVidia cards work a lot better under linux because of the mostly excellent nVidia drivers.

Good Luck :-D

If you do not plan on doing any graphically intesive stuff on Linux, then you definately made the right choice, however for me it wasn't even an option since I knew I'd be primarily using Linux and would be having to work with some heavy graphics apps at some point.

The most graphic intensive task I'm going to do on linux (at least for now) it's blender :p

Anyways, bmouring and linux_0 thank you very much for your help, I managed to install correctly the ati drivers, the last step resultd a little bit different in the xorg file than the one on the URL you posted but except from it it went perfect (+1800fps) and it recognizes it correctly

Possibly next weekend I'll manage to do a little bit more and have more fun with it :D

One thing, I notice that open office is a liiiiiiiittle bit slower than I thought :p but that's not too much of a problem

Finally, in my BIOS there is an option "Burst Lenght" it says that "64 bit dq must be 4 beats". In windows, raising it from 4 beats to 8 beats improved my memory bandwith a little bit (~200MB read ~100MB write), what's that? :p

Yup, nvidia so far is better than ati @ opengl based games as far as I know

Congrats on getting one of the trickier drivers installed!

In reference to OPenOffice, that is one issue many have had with OO.o. I personally use Crossover Office and actual Microsoft office on my laptop (because I've had issues with reading professor's Powerpoint notes in OO.o Impress) and it works pretty well. Really it's a matter of balancing your needs with cost (both financial and, for some, ideological)

TY man!

I agre that needs are the key but, seriously, it was more the itch I had for linux that the actual need of a change, I wanted this for a few months ago, buit what kind of linux (with a GUI) can you run on this rig:
Pentium I: 233MMX
16x4MB EDO SIMM
WD IDE 7200rpm 30GB
Mobo: dunno, socket 7 chipset intel triton
vidcard: GeForce2 MX400 64Mb PCI

I had that rig for 8 years, the biggest upgrades I did were 2 extra 16Mb SIMMS, change the original Quantum Bigfoot 4GB drive for that and changing vidcards from a Trident 9680 4Mb

It's a pretty light weight distro. The more RAM you have the better.

I've actually used both Knoppix and FC4 on a 300MHz AMD Geode with 256MB RAM. It ran slow but it ran.

It will be quite painful with less RAM. 128MB is about the minimum you need to run X11 under normal circumstances using a normal distribution.

64Mb= O.o!
xD

I was @ a friends house trying to run fedora 4 on a PIII 433 (or was it celeron?:p) 192Mb ram, but since he coulndt get his net working, he discarded the proyect, now he has a new pc and he recently downloaded suse, I think he will install it tomorrow

A 433 will run a little slow but it should run fine as long as you add RAM to it.

A newer system should run a lot better :-D

I can verify that, an old box with 96M and a Pentium II would run X-less just fine, but even the twm Window system was horribly slow to start (ok once it got going). I'd say anything less than a 500 MHz processor with ~128M and you shouldn't run X. Anything less than a 1GHz processor with 256M and you shouldn't run Gnome/KDE.

For old hardware I like DSL (as linux_0 so deftly pointed out), Debian w/ a *box WM, or if I have lots of time to let it compile, Gentoo, again with a *box (or sometimes XFCE4) WM.

Indeed indeed :-D

An Ancient distribution should work as well.

I used to run X11 just fine on a 486DX-2 66MHz back in 1995 :-D

Of course an old distro won't be as friendly as a modern one but it will work.

Intersting

I lack a second monitor but as soon as I have one I'll try to run some kind of linux on that old rig o mine, the only requirements are:
-Very Windows-like (the main users woul dbe my grandma and possibly my mom)
-That's all xDxD

Also it has an 30Gb HDD (well, now my uncle is using it), it's not much, but at least it's something, and I could use it as a small file reservoir

The best thing I could do would be try to find a 128MB SDRAM module to replace those old simm ones, but I dont know if I can find t + Im saving for another HDD for my current rig (I'll sell my old radeon 9250 and I'll be half way there)

BTW, you guys seem like you will answer this question, so, how hard will it be for a complete ignorant to create a program that given angle theta and radius r could make, graph and print a draw levies (just like in a polar coordinate system graph), Me + a friend made one to calculate the trajectory of a space station at a given altitude, but in java, and he wrote it, I just made all the equations and stuff+flux diagram, but it wouldn't draw the trajectory, just PUKE a lotta coordinates and times :p, I'm asking this cuz today @ class we were studying levies and I'm pretty much a lazy bum for that kind of stuff, so I thught, it would be pretty neat to let a machine to do this job xD. Most likely I would spend more time writing the program than doing myself the drawing, but it would be kinda cool :p
