Some of the threads created in the Server forum the past few days are very 'home' stuff, and the replies they receive is super-lame homebuilt forum quality posts.
Why is no one asking the harder enterprise stuff for me to answer?
Maybe I should go spend more time in the Storage forum again and try to see if there's any SAN related threads in there.
It is good we have you there to answer that stuff.
Iv'e built quite a few Chenbro small servers for businesses in the past but I just do the hardware ... can't be stuffed with the software side of that world.
I usually tell them to stuff the thing full of RAM, get the fastest / most cores they can afford, and a suitable conservative RAID setup ...
Hence ... over to someone like you for finer grained advice regarding servers.
Hell ... my knowledge really stops there.
My Compaz server here has linux on a 1.2Gb HDD ... LOL

I'm sure that for Gavin Arvizo that will be very much the case.

WHAT?!?!?!
My section is being haragued
might have to go visit there now
Her's a question for you Wuzy:
For a server Fedora, openSUSE, or FreeBSD?
Also, do you know where I can buy/build get parts for a Solaris workstation (I mean a legit SPARC) just to mess around such as VMs, Containers, etc on (obviously with openSolaris or Sun Solaris
)? I'v seen a few Niagara 2 based builds with decent specs for ~$500, are they any good?
PS: I'm trying to keep away from Ebay/Craigslist,etc. Anywhere else that sells refurbed, etc SPARCs?
PSS: And yes, I realize you can run this on a x86-64 but I really want to mess around with a SPARC just cause I haven't don it.

I know exactly why you want to mess with SPARC, it may not be as good as x86-64 in terms of general usage (or performance) as they're tuned to be very specific, but knowing something about it is always good.
The entry price to used SPARC hardware (several thousands, new price is 10s-thousands) has always kept me out of it unfortunately so I have absolutely zero experience nor knowledge about them.
What's the usage of the server you intend to build?
My latest craze atm is "100% uptime" and that include clusters of baremetal hypervisor boxes running ESX/ESXi 4 (whitebox building) to do things like vMotion and VMWare HA, building dedicated software iSCSI SAN target box (storage clustering seems a bit out of my reach atm) and trying do that with only 3 nodes(all DIY boxes) for SMB/SME usage. Basically I'm trying to be my own vendor by creating a complete solution, for myself.
For software iSCSI SAN target I've put down OpenSolaris (x86-64 obviously) as one of the candidates. The rest are BSD/Linux distros like OpenFiler and FreeNAS. Then there's Windows Storage Server 2008.
This is the thread I've been posting my brainstorm ideas in if you're interested. It's a very long-term project as I'm very budget limited and want to plan it right.
In other news amdfangirl just qualified for the 3.5 revision e spec with this:
Sometimes I want to set Windows on fire. But it's software, so that makes it a bit hard.
oohh ... I want the 3.5 revision e spec .... um ... whatever that is.
Is it a type of graphics card ... or some advanced form of virus?

Note I made some appropriate comments for that article after road testing the Keg.
I did damage a good gaming mouse ... retired it from serious competition.
Also suffered a headache next day ... possibly unrelated ... possibly not.
Attempts to drive the jeep on Crysis was poor ... as was all attempts at stealth using the cloak.

I asked mine and she caused the damage to my hand and the mouse.

1. I plan to use it as a NAS/Fileserver/Print server and possibly AV scan/Firewall and so obviously up time is important.
2. Don't need SCSI,etc just plain ol SATA or IDE (have like 8x 250GB IDE drives) will work.
3. Just took a look at Ebay, they have used ones with no HDD for ~$200+, but those all seem to be old SPARK (360Mhz) CPUs. I'm looking for at least 500Mhz.
4. Your link is censored. Use bit.ly: http://bit.ly/ link.

Psh, anything is possible! I'm sure there's a virus out there somewhere that starts deleting Windows while showing a picture of a flame!

Fantastic Flame <-- close enough for you?

Unfarkinbelievable, after all those years xcpus is still censored even with the old mod team gone (cept one). PM'ing Justin to fix it.
This should work now.
"NAS/Fileserver/Print server and possibly AV scan/Firewall", that's all?
This is the list of of active VMs I currently run on my server (ESX 4):
-Asterisk server (currently using Trixbox, will switch to Elastix when 2.0 is released)
-Vyatta (a router+firewall distro. pfSense currently inactive)
-OpenFiler (iSCSI SAN target and NAS hybrid)
-Server 2008 R2 + Exchange 2010
-CactiEZ (for SNMP monitoring)
-F@H #1
-F@H #2 (occasionally inactive when I need to run more VMs)
I need a physical Windows box though for TV tuners consolidation and not putting the box to waste, to double as an dedicated iSCSI SAN target also. So that means running Microsoft software iSCSI target. I'll wait till the next Windows Server release which will include it and not as separate with WSS08. Currently WSS08 is based on NT6 and not NT6.1.
Too much tech talk and not enough humour.
Post pictures of funny stuff...
cats are fine ...
I've been trying to get the x_cpus domain removed from the filter for a while, but there's a bug (no way!) in the language filter system that is preventing it from being removed. Oddly enough, hardwarecanucks got off the list fine.
| randomizer wrote : .... Oddly enough, hardwarecanucks got off the list fine. |
Huh? Didn't knew about that. Was there a story behind it? Let me guess, the work of the old mod team again?
Yeah but random we don't want x_cpus taken off the list.
A whole heap of really disgruntled ex-THG evil people reside there and they eat human flesh and dance naked around burning cats ...
wusy told me this in a dream I had ...
wuzy, justin said (when he removed hardwarecanucks) that he thought it was being "spammed".

Not much else (besides coding, etc) to do with a SPARC build lol.
Currently:
I have a openSUSE/Fedora box for writing code (mostly Java, some C++, some Pearl)
I have a Server 08 R2(Web)/Win 7 box for running games
I have a Server 08 R2 (Standard) box for running CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor and some CFD)
I have a OSX/Fedora/openSUSE/openSolaris/Win 7/Server 08R2/Vista x64/XP x64 box for just messing around.
I have a openSUSE based file server/firewall/print server
Planing to add:
A SPARC build for just messing around on (coding, etc)

well then i think the third pic was inapropriate
