Hi everyone. I have a thread started in the Asus motherboard section but its not getting any replies so i thought i would put something in the general section as well.

I picked up my A8R32-MVP on friday and have been trying to get my hardware to perform since. The problem seems to be with my CPU, an Opty 165 CBBWE 0551 MPMW. Since the upgrade from an ASRock 939Dual, the CPU scores in 3dmark06 have dropped about 400-500pts at stock speeds (around 1850pts @ 1.8Ghz with ASRock 939Dual, 1350pts @ 1.8Ghz with A8R32-MVP). All the GPU scores are pretty much where they were...just the CPU isnt performing. I have tried countless things like installing a few different versions of the cool n quiet driver (the one off the cd as well as an updated one off the AMD site), installinguninstalling the dual core hotfix from MS, updating ULi chipset drivers, switching ram from A1+B1 to A2+B2, updating bios from 0201 to 0311 to 0404 (none of which offered any performance difference over the last), tried catalyst 6.4, 6.3 and now on omega 6.3. Ive tried it with all my bios settings on AUTO as well as setting them all manually, nothing. I cant think of what else to try.

One thing that ive noticed that i think is really shitty, is that the xpress 3200 chip dosnt have any drivers...it just uses the ones that MS has from what ive heard though i dont think that would have anything to do with the problem because i think it mainly handles the graphic side of things.

So i dont know what im going to do. Im going to try formatting again, though i think the outcome will be the same...i cant say till i try it.

Anyone got any ideas???

Specs:
Asus A8R32-MVP, Opteron 165 @ 1.8Ghz, Kingston Value Ram 2x512 DDR400, ATi X1900XT, Antec Neo HE550 PSU.

Any help and|or suggestions are greatly apprecciated.

New windows install?

When i got the board, like when i change out any major piece of hardware, i did a format. The results of my 1st post were after a fresh format. So i tried it again to make sure that i didnt install anything stupid to mess things up....and the problem still exists. Im constantly getting a CPU score of 1350 in 3dmark 06 where i was getting consistent 1800+ pts with the ASRock 939dual. Its really an odd problem because the CPU is the only thing that seems to be affected. The SM2.0 and HDRSM3.0 score are within reason (less than 100pts difference) so the graphics platform is working without flaw. Well, i guess im going to try swapping the old ASRock board back in to see if i get the same performance as old and if i do, then it might a flaw in the board. All the other forums that ive read have had all their problems fixed with the 0311 bios update but they had different problems than mine. Maybe i will try to get a replacement to see if it fixes it. We will see how it goes.

Are you sure that board is compatible with a dual core processor?
I will never buy an asus board again. There quality has really gone down in the last year or two. Just read the reviews on newegg. It seems like a cheap board to be running an opty on anyways.
I have heard a lot of bad things about that board. Apparentl asus and ati are working on the problem. Asus has let its customers down again. Read here:

maybe u have cooln' quiet turned on. that can hurt performance. try to turn it off.

To respond to the last 3 posts:

to wusy: The board was using an HTT multi of 5 on the ASRock board, that is guaranteed because i set it manually. It also showed up that way in programs.

to MrsD: I have only owned 1 prior asus board, that was the A7N8X-E Deluxe, and it was rock solid...i have never had any bad experiences with ASUS. For the record, it has the Opteron Logo on the front of the box saying its compatible, and my processor (Opteron 165) is on the compatible CPU chart on the asus website.

to CarPcMelee: I tried running it with and without cool and quiet on, no difference. I also tried it with and without the cool and quiet driver, as well as the dual core MS hotfix, nothing helped.

I have sent an email off to the retailer stating my problems and am currently waiting to hear back.

Honestly, run away from that board. I'm running a 170 on it now, but I'm gonna RMA this mofo when the DFI board(the new one w/ RD580 chipset) gets here.

Check your HTT multiplier. Make sure it's set to 1GHz. Then, have fun with the headache of OCing on that board. The voltage is weird on board. I have my Opty at 2.6GHz right now, but with the irregular voltage of the board, it won't go higher. Good luck, cause no one can really help you except ASUS, and they seem to be MIA in this case.

Overclocking didnt seem to be too big of an issue, though i didnt get to test stability too much cause i was trying to make the processor work right. I had it up to 2.52Ghz, it probably wasnt too stable, but it booted no problem, enough for me to mess around in windows anyways. I did notice that the voltage options were a bit off. When i had it set to 1.35V (default for opties) it would read everywhere as 1.38-1.42v (asus probe2, cpuz). To get it to an actual 1.35v i would have to set it to 1.30v. That was also with the overvolt options off. To say the least this 1st RD580 mobo is quite problematic. I might also send this one back and wait for the DFI solution...maybe they will have some problems ironed out by then. When is that DFI board set to be released? Anyone know?

Reply to EllisD420

I've got the same board as well and as soon as the dfi mobo is released for the ati3200 chipset i will be buying that. Poor stability for ocing. The chipset uses the catalyst drivers to install so use ati 6.4 driver.

It's out now, I already ordered mine, I should be getting it today or tomorrow. I would act fast on this board if you are really considering it, cause lots of people have been waiting for it, especially those of us with the crapshoot of an ASUS MVP board...

When I get it I'll definitely let you guys know how it runs.

The only bummer about this board is the cost:|

Awesome. I have been watching DFI-Street very closely for Angry_Games review of this board, he has been extensively testing it since it arrived.

So i took the board back to the shop for them to test it, they said that they would give me a call tomorrow about the results. For the time being, i revived my xp2000+, A7N8X-E Deluxe, AIW 7500, 768MB ram beast of a system, lol. I am probably going to just say i dont want a replacement and exchange it for a nice RAM kit seeing as ive been running this 2x512mb Kingston Value Ram for years now. When A_G finally gives his input on this board, and what kinds of OC results he gets, i will look into getting one. Probably next month or something.

Mythbuntu is an OS that can record TV programs. You can install XBMC on it and play all of the most popular video formats. Linux has a number of video players besides XBMC -- mplayer, ffmpeg, xine, and even Boxee. Linux prefers Nvidia video cards for playing video.
