What is a good CPU that costs less than $300?

I was originally going to go with the i7 6700k for $310 on amazon.com. But then I thought, do I really need i7. I am going to be moderate gaming and mostly doing work on this pc. So I am not sure what to do. What do most new games on steam require as a processor? In order for this pc to last a long time, should i get i7?
