New graphics card turns on but won't display?

I recently bought a ZOTAC GeForce GTX 970 graphics card to upgrade my computer, but when I tried to install it I had no luck. The fans spun but my monitor said "check video cable" and simply wouldn't display anything.

I ended up putting my old graphics card (the one my computer came with) back in to connect to my monitor again. At first I thought it might be the PSU, but I replaced it with a 500w one and still had the same issue. I also exchanged the graphics card for a new one thinking it might be faulty somehow, but this one doesn't work either, so I'm guessing that's not the case. Does anyone know what the issue might be?

Computer: Dell XPS 8700
PSU: EVGA 500w
Video Card: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 970

It might also be worth noting that I've never upgraded my PC before. I'm a little new to it, so please bear with me.

  1. Does the monitor work for sure, and or the cables?

The monitor and cables all work fine with my old graphics card, a NVIDIA GeForce GT 720 (it came with the pc).
